Assessment

Assessment of this level 7 (Masters level) module will include a written examination and a portfolio of laboratory case studies.

Learners will be supported in this assessment by in-session guidance from the teaching team and formative feedback on work completed in the initial practical session.

The course syllabus typically covers the following broad topics and sub-topics:

  • The biology of blood transfusion
  • Laboratory aspects of blood transfusion
  • The process of blood transfusion (vein to vein)
  • Transfusion transmitted infections
  • Blood transfusion therapy
  • Management of blood transfusion therapy.

Introduction

This 30 credit Applied Transfusion Science module aims to provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the theory and practice of blood transfusion. On completion of the module, you will have a sound understanding of haematopoiesis and haemostasis; clinical laboratory practice and management of blood transfusion therapy.

This module focuses on the understanding and application of laboratory transfusion practice and clinical application in the blood transfusion process which is underpinned by knowledge of the pre-requisite biology and pathophysiology of the haematopoietic system.

For an applicant looking to top-up an undergraduate degree to obtain an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) accreditation, please refer to the Biomedical Science module top-up for IBMS/HCPC accreditation for more information.

Key Facts

Modules can be offered either individually or collectively if you have had your first degree evaluated by the IBMS and require further Top-up studies in order to complete the educational requirement for IBMS accreditation.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching will be delivered in blocks with additional tutorials and interactive lectures. Face-to-face teaching will include practical classes, case studies and scenario-based teaching, using tools such as Resimion.

Teaching will be practice-led, embedding the application of transfusion science theory, together with current clinical management of blood transfusion therapy.
