A written assignment (2,000-2,500 words) focusing on your chosen area of interest, critically reflecting on your practitioner experiences and exploring relevant theoretical evidence bases for purpose, theoretical framework, new or opposing ideas in order to develop and assess existing knowledge and experiences.

This 15 credit module can contribute towards the MA Education (three to five year version and two year version).

Content

The module syllabus typically includes the following topics:

  • Examination of critical educational theory and the relationship between theory, research and practical application
  • Reflective enquiry into own practice and that of others
  • Shaping understanding of the role of a professionally aware and evidence informed leader
  • Articulating a critically informed and clear vision for improving practice
  • Considerations of professional learning and continuous improvement through identification and communication of priorities and use of good implementation practices
  • Bridging the gap between theoretical understanding, improving practice and whole school culture.

Introduction

This 15 credit level 7 (Masters level) Leading Teaching module will enable you to shape a clear understanding of leading teaching through professional development and how this aligns with a whole school culture.

The Leading Teaching module aims to:

  • critically explore theory related to good practice and appraise how this is implemented
  • raise understanding of how to lead good practice within supportive professional environments
  • critically appraise the alignment between good practice, professional development, wider school improvement priorities and pupil outcomes.

You will develop your understanding of the science of teaching and learning and use this to reflect on your own practice and that of others. The module is intended for current and aspiring leaders in schools.

On successful completion of this module, you will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Reflect on and critically appraise practitioner experiences as a leader of teaching
  • Articulate a developed understanding of and a personal rationale for leading teaching
  • Appraise and critically apply a relevant theoretical evidence base.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods will include a mix of activities including webinars, meetings, lectures, readings, tasks and activities alongside independent study and tutor support.

Study facilities

The School of Education and Childhood at UWE Bristol runs a variety of courses in early childhood and education studies, and is one of the largest providers of initial teacher training and continuing professional development in the region. Experienced tutors and leading researchers and practitioners in their fields teach in the School. We have excellent facilities and a range of flexible study areas and online learning tools for our students.
