The course syllabus typically includes:

  • Understanding the perinatal context
  • Health promotion and barriers to accessing care
  • The range and impact of maternal psychiatric conditions and their treatment
  • The aetiology, risks, recurrence and complications for mothers with psychotic and non-psychotic illness, their baby and infants in the perinatal period
  • Working across agencies and disciplines
  • Case studies of positive practice
  • Assessment and management of risk in the perinatal period
  • The infant, partner and family Individualised care planning and pathways, the interface with these in the assessment, treatment and management of mental health disorders
  • Leadership and service improvement
  • Competency frameworks to support professional development
  • Considerations and challenges facing those working with women and families
  • Understanding one's own emotional responses and reflective practice
  • Supervision and management of others

Introduction

This 20 credit Perinatal Mental Health for Health and Social Care Practitioners module will be relevant if you wish to advance your skills and knowledge in perinatal mental health. It will be particularly appropriate if you are a midwife, health visitor, neonatal nurse, mental health nurse or other Health and Social Care Professional, who works with women and their families in pregnancy and up to one year after birth.

You will develop critical knowledge and understanding of: perinatal mental health; implications of mental illness for women, infants and families; care pathways, policy and guidelines for practice; approaches to assessment; appropriate management and treatments. It will also help to develop a critical reflection on your own and others practice, through the use of case studies.

For leading in enhancing quality care provision, this level 6 or level 7 module also provides opportunities for you to critically evaluate current guidelines, national and local service provision and identify areas for innovation in practice and local service development, which could be taken forward as a future work-based project.

You may be able to study these modules at Level 6 (BSc level) or Level 7 (Masters level) depending on your academic circumstances. Please contact the CPD Team or the Module Leader for advice if you are unsure which level would be best for you.

Learning and Teaching

A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used:

  • Lectures, seminars, case studies, simulation, role play, learner's presentations.
  • Group discussions and action learning sets to enable learners to engage in critical reflective discussions, based upon your practice experiences.
  • E-learning and virtual learning, including online discussion forums and e-portfolio.

Teaching will be by subject specialists such as specialist midwives and health visitors, psychologists and specialist mental health lecturers. Service users organisations and visiting guest speakers will be utilised to share their experiences, to inform you on specific areas and about specific organisations/services.

Independent study will include essential reading for preparation for each taught session, presentation preparation, case study and assessment preparation. You will be encouraged to keep a reflective portfolio of learning development and work on this will also be counted within these hours.
