Theories of teaching, learning and assessment

  • Philosophy of adult learning
  • Theory, principles and professional implications of learning and assessing
  • Learning and assessment theories and their application to practice
  • The use of evidence based practice to inform practice teaching and to determine standards

Entry Requirements

You must be a qualified healthcare practitioner.


Non Credit Bearing (half day attendance).

This module provides you with an understanding of the principles of teaching, assessment theory and mentorship with access to additional learning via BlackBoard.

On completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Develop and expand your role as a mentor and facilitator of learning. 
  • Act as a resource and contribute to the development of effective learning opportunities underpinned by safe evidence based practice.
  • Analyse the principles and practices of effective learning and assessment in the workplace.
  • Establish effective working relationships that facilitate professional  development in self and others.
  • Be accountable for confirming that you have met or not met professional competencies
  • initiate and maintain professional boundaries, within the confines of safe practice, that are sufficiently flexible for providing inter-professional care.

Key Facts

This module is for Midwifery applicants only. The Facilitating Learning and Assessment in Practice (FLAP) module enables qualified health care practitioners to mentor students in their area of practice. The module meets the NMC (2008) Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice.

Learning and Teaching

Facilitated Learning and Assessment in Practice (FLAP) will be delivered at non- credit bearing using a variety of approaches, which may include; lectures, seminars, distance and online learning, workshops and reflection on practice through units of study.
