Assessment

 

  • Assessment of Professional Competencies by an approved qualified practitioner using the single competency framework for all prescribers (NPC, 2012), which meets the NMC Standards.
  • A Prescribing portfolio to demonstrate that you have achieved the required standard in all of the elements required by the NMC to register as a community prescriber.

The portfolio is required to contain all of the following:

  • A statement from your registered prescribing supervisor confirming your attendance, the achievement of practice competencies and a final report. You must include your learning contract and action plans.
  • A certificate confirming that a Numeracy Test, set and marked by a member of the academic has been passed at 100%.
  • Evidence of the minimum 80% pass mark for the Pharmacology MCQ and Short Answer Question exam. The written examination will consist of a total of twenty, short answer and multi-choice questions (MCQs) to test pharmacological knowledge and its application to practice. This is a 1.5 hour unseen examination.
  • A presentation to demonstrate safe and appropriate prescribing decisions. This must include one accurately written prescription demonstrating calculations and a reference list. More information will be given during the face-to-face sessions.
  • Directed Learning Activities assessed by the Prescribing Mentor in practice completed throughout the programme.

You will be able to gain ongoing feedback from Practice Teachers/Mentors during their practice placement and obtain formative feedback on other aspects of your prescribing portfolio from academic staff.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Assess and consult with patients/clients, parents and carers appropriately
  • Undertake a comprehensive and appropriate assessment, including medication history and current medication to inform diagnosis
  • Interpret and apply the legislation relevant to the practice of nurse/midwife prescribing
  • Critically appraise and use sources of information, advice and decision support systems in prescribing practice
  • Critically analyse the influences that can affect prescribing and demonstrate your understanding by managing your prescribing practice in an ethical way
  • Interpret and apply knowledge of drug actions in prescribing practice
  • Evaluate the roles and relationships of others involved in prescribing, supplying, and administering medicines
  • Prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively
  • Practice within a framework of professional accountability and responsibility in relation to nurse/midwife prescribing
  • Evaluate the unique implications and developmental context of the anatomical and physiological differences between neonates, children and young people.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for the level 6 or level 7 module, you must be an NMC-registered nurse undertaking the SPQ District Nursing qualification, plus support from a prescriber in practice.

Introduction

This 20 credit V100 Prescribing Practice module is available at level 6 (UZVRU5-20-3) or level 7 (UZVRU4-20-M). The syllabus for the teaching of this module reflects current NMC requirements to register as a community practitioner nurse prescriber and will include:

  • Consultation, decision-making and therapy, including referral.
  • Influences on, and psychology of, prescribing.
  • Prescribing in a team context; clinical pharmacology, including the effects of co-morbidity.
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to nurse prescribing; legal, policy and ethical aspects.
  • Professional accountability and responsibility and prescribing in the public health context.

You may be able to study these modules at level 6 (BSc level) or level 7 (Masters level) depending on your academic circumstances. Please contact the CPD Team or the Module Leader for advice if you are unsure which level would be best for you.

Learning and Teaching

A variety of approaches will be used in the delivery of the level 6 (undergraduate level) or level 7 (Masters level) module, including:

  • Placement learning
    Learning in practice will comprise a minimum of 65 hours.
  • Scheduled learning
    (approximately 40 hours) includes lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials.
  • Independent learning
    (approximately 95 hours) includes hours engaged with essential reading, exam preparation, portfolio completion, assignment preparation and completion, etc.
