A 3000 word submission (or equivalent). The title to be agreed.

You will have the opportunities for formative assessment and to discuss your approach and negotiate the content and process of your report with the supervisor.

The title of the submission will be agreed as part of the learning contract and will reflect an area of practice identified for exploration. This assessment strategy is most suited to Independent Study as it enables you to agree on a design that best represents your aim and agree how you prefer to approach the assignment and required assessment.

This assessment is flexible to enable you to represent your achievements, refinements, developments and planning of their practice. A reflective approach is encouraged to enable the you to best represent your academic and practice achievements.

Content

The specific content of the module will be negotiated with a member of academic staff and will vary as a function of the identified area of practice for exploration.

There is no formal contact time and you can expect to receive sufficient support to remain focused. You will engage with the relevent staff member and identify early on what your focus for the Independent Study will be.

You will be encouraged to integrate your practice activities into the study perhaps visiting specialist areas of practice to inform your own - you will have to arrange this.

This Independent Study module does NOT entitle you or expect you to carry out research.

Introduction

On successful completion of this Independent Study module at level 3 you will be able to:

  • Identify an aspect of practice that lends itself to study and exploration.
  • Critically review a range of theories related to the knowledge base of an aspect of practice identified for exploration.
  • Justify and analyse your ideas and/or views related to the identified aspect of practice and related to professional practice.
  • Engage with debates in relation to ways in which your own practice might be enhanced, improved or maintained.
  • Reflect upon evaluation strategies for practice.

at Masters level:

  • Identify and justify an aspect of practice that lends itself to study and exploration.
  • Critically examine and review an extensive range of theories supporting the knowledge base of an aspect of practice identified for focused exploration.
  • Justify and analyse your ideas and/or views related to the identified aspect of practice and related to professional practice.
  • Critically engage with professional debates in relation to ways in which your own practice might be enhanced, improved or maintained.
  • Convincingly evidence detailed and deep understanding and evaluation in specialised areas and of current theory and research.
