Assessment

The assessment will comprise the completion of a clinical portfolio to include summative clinical assessments, and a Structured Oral and Practical Examination (SOPE).

A range of resources including simulation opportunities and practical workshops will be available in addition to tutor support and feedback both in practice and via the module team.

Content

The syllabus for this level 7 (Masters level) module typically covers:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • The role of ultrasound in the diagnosis, treatment and management of women with gynaecological disorders
  • The role of ultrasound in assisted reproduction programmes
  • Scanning techniques
  • Interpretation and reporting of normal ultrasound appearances
  • Interpretation and reporting of abnormal ultrasound appearances, including potential differential diagnoses
  • Professional and employment issues relating to gynaecological ultrasound practice
  • Work-related upper limb disorders.

Entry Requirements

To apply, you must be working in a relevant area of ultrasound practice, and have either completed or be enrolled on a relevant physics or the Fundamentals of Ultrasound Technology module, by agreement with the module leader.

Introduction

The aim of this 15 credit Gynaelogical Ultrasound module is to develop safe and competent practitioner equipped with knowledge, critical understanding and professional skills for participation in an effective gynaecological ultrasound imaging service.  

Learning and Teaching

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Engage in effective communication with clients, their families and healthcare professionals, reflecting critically on the effectiveness of own communication skills and level of care provided.
  • Plan and perform trans-abdominal and trans-vaginal gynaecological ultrasound examinations safely, competently and professionally, according to local policies and current evidence base.
  • Interpret normal and abnormal scans, and report upon the ultrasound findings formulating differential diagnosis with an appropriate management or follow up plan.
  • Critically evaluate the use of ultrasound in gynaecology, with active contributions to the multi-disciplinary healthcare team and where appropriate, propose alternatives for service improvement.
