The course syllabus will cover:

  • Psychosocial approaches in the context of current views of mental health
  • Building therapeutic relationships and developing a working alliance
  • Service user narrative, engagement and assessment
  • Understanding psychosis: approaches to working with individuals and families
  • Working with someone who has problematic drug use
  • Understanding anxiety and depression: strategies to help
  • Psychosocial perspectives on supporting someone at risk of suicide
  • Understanding complex trauma and working with someone who has problems with emotional regulation.

Introduction

This 20 credit Psycho-Social Interventions for Serious Mental Health Problems module has been developed to support the development of people working in Health Care Assistant/Mental Health Worker roles across inpatient and community mental health services.

The level 6 (undergraduate level) module aims to give you an understanding and overview of psychosocial approaches to enable you to support service users and also contribute to multidisciplinary team approaches.

On successful completion of this module, you will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of psychosocial approaches that support mental health service user recovery
  • Critically evaluate and discuss psychosocial interventions in the context of a contemporary understanding of mental health
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding and appreciation of psychosocial approaches in practice
  • Identify and use a range of investigative strategies in relation to evidence evaluating and developing psychosocial approaches.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods for this course will include group teaching (blended online and face-to-face), critical discussion, small group work, experiential learning, enquiry-based learning.
