This course has been designed for qualified health professionals working in, or who have an interest in, neurological rehabilitation.
Introduction
UWE Bristol is delighted to offer a new addition to its portfolio of postgraduate study days which aims for you to develop your knowledge and understanding of cognitive, emotional and behavioral problems faced by people with acquired non-progressive brain injury.
The study day will be delivered by world renowned expert in neuropsychological rehabilitation, Professor Barbara Wilson; a clinical neuropsychologist who has worked in brain injury rehabilitation for 42 years. She has published 27 books (with two more in press), 201 peer reviewed papers, 123 chapters and 8 neuropsychological texts, and was founder of the Oliver Zangwill Centre for Neuropsychological Rehabilitation in Cambridge.
Learning and Teaching

09:00 - 10:15 | The nature and purpose of rehabilitation and some general principles to help those with cognitive deficits. What are the main problems faced by people with acquired non progressive brain injury and how do you distinguish between different cognitive problems and between cognitive, emotional and behavioral problems? |
10:15 - 10:45 | Morning break |
10:45 - 12:00 | Strategies to reduce memory, executive, visuospatial and visuoperceptual difficulties. What are the different approaches you can consider to mediate these problems? We focus on three main strategies namely improving learning, compensations and environmental adaptations. |
12:00 - 13:00 | Lunch break |
13:00 - 14:15 | A brief word on dealing with the emotional consequences of brain injury. A structure for designing treatment programmes for people with neuropsychological impairments. Group versus individual therapy. |
14:15 - 14:30 | Afternoon break |
14:30 - 15:45 | Clinical examples are provided together with evidence for the effectiveness of neuropsychological rehabilitation. It will be shown that rehabilitation can help people to compensate for, bypass or reduce their everyday problems and thus survive more efficiently in their own most appropriate environments. |
