The intended learning objectives of the study are to:

  • Describe the processes underlying neurological recovery in someone with stroke
  • Critique current theory and evidence relating to motor learning in stroke
  • Describe the ways in which practice may be structured to maximise functional recovery
  • Understand the role of instruction and feedback in motor performance and motor learning
  • Recognise the role of the therapist as a coach, and discuss the ways in which healthcare professionals can enhance engagement and motivation.
  • Apply and adapt current theory and evidence relating to motor learning to a broad range of clinical scenarios (e.g. those with profound weakness, cognitive and language impairment).

Introduction

UWE Bristol is delighted to offer a new addition to its portfolio of postgraduate study days which aims for you to develop your knowledge and understanding of concepts of motor learning and skill acquisition, and their application to neurological rehabilitation. The majority of research considered will focus on people with stroke, however theories and concepts related to motor skill learning can be applied to a number of neurological conditions.

The course will be delivered by Dr Vicky Hood Moore; a physiotherapy lecturer and researcher at the University of Nottingham. Vicky also runs her own private practice. She has an MSc in Bioengineering, and a PhD in human movement analysis.

The study day will include presentations, video footage to demonstrate key concepts and learning activities. The description below gives a broad agenda for the day.
