The course explores the research evidence that underpins the teaching and learning of early reading. The course will enable participants to develop practical skills and knowledge as well as encourage reflection on both how children develop as readers and how teachers can develop as teachers of reading.

Introduction

This half-day CPD course is the perfect opportunity to advance your teaching skills within the classroom.

Our Education courses are designed to help you advance your professional skills and enhance your teaching career. Teachers completing this CPD day course will be awarded a certificate of completion. The certificate will provide proof of your participation which will serve as evidence for your on-going development.

The course aims and outcomes include the following:

  • Contextualising the teaching of early reading: purpose, motivation and engagement.
  • Effective phonics teaching.
  • The role of reading for pleasure (even with a phonetically decodable text).
  • Developing vocabulary.
  • Exploring early fluency

Who is it for?

For primary and early years teachers in state and private sector schools. This programme is facilitated by our Senior Lecturers in Primary Initial Teacher Education.

What do I get out of it?

This half-day CPD is closely aligned with the 2019 Ofsted framework.

During the day, you will experience first-hand practical activities that are linked to research led practice and explore how to how best to support your current approaches to the teaching of early reading. For each of the key areas covered, we will consider what effective practice looks like and how you can assess children's progress. We will also support you to consider how you can develop an action plan going forwards, as well as encourage you to think about how you can capture the impacts of your work on your children, the teachers in your school and/or your wider school community.
