The course explores the research evidence that underpins the teaching and learning of reading comprehension with a focus on inference. The course will enable participants to develop practical skills and knowledge as well as encourage reflection on both how children develop as readers and how teachers can develop as teachers of reading.

This half-day CPD course is the perfect opportunity to advance your teaching skills within the classroom.

Our Education courses are designed to help you advance your professional skills and enhance your teaching career. Teachers completing this CPD day course will be awarded a certificate of completion. The certificate will provide proof of your participation which will serve as evidence for your on-going development.

The course aims and outcomes include the following:

  • Identifying the skills of comprehension and the strategies to develop those skills
  • Understanding how these skills and strategies are used to enable inference
  • Conceptualising inference as using the evidence and clues in the text to, through reasoning, interpret meaning
  • The key role of vocabulary in inference making
  • Approaches to teaching it all!

Who is it for?

For primary and early years school teachers at state and private sector schools.

What do I get out of it?

During the day, you will experience first-hand practical activities that are linked to research led practice and explore how to develop your current approaches to the teaching of reading comprehension. Inference, as a key element of comprehension, will be explored with a focus on the different ways inference impacts on understanding of text as well as consider some practical approaches to developing inference through the structuring of questions, active approaches to engaging with text and exploring the role of vocabulary in inference.
