Tree of Life is an approach to counselling developed by Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo in collaboration with David Denborough, to support children affected by HIV and AIDS.

The methodology is now used in mental health and psychosocial services in different parts of the world and with people of all ages. It helps people to talk about the stories of their lives in ways that make them stronger. It focuses on the second stories of people's lives (stories of hopes, values, dreams, commitments, skills and knowledges and more) which give people hope and encouragement and support them to tackle the problems of life.

Entry Requirements

Any core training in the helping professions and/or current opportunities to apply this Method in your practice.

Expected attendees: community practitioners, people working in mental health, qualified psychologists and social workers, community mental health, educators and teachers, psychosocial wellbeing. Background in these roles/professions will be assumed.

Introduction

We are excited to welcome Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo, Narrative Therapist and Psychologist, International Speaker and Trainer, and the co-founder of the Tree of Life methodology to UWE Bristol. This training is an opportunity for practitioners to engage in a face-to-face introduction to the Tree of Life methodology across two days, which includes: 

• the foundations, histories and 'roots' of Tree of Life Methodology
• an introduction to Narrative Therapy and Imbeleko principles that inform the Tree of Life Methodology
• trying out the four parts of the Tree of Life Methodology with practical experiential exercises
• a look at the 'evidence base' and potential applications and adaptations, to ensure you have confidence to apply this methodology in your practice(s).
